History of modern medicine is not very old in Nepal. We had to depend on alternative medicines. Still alternative medicine is main treatment modalilty in many parts of the country, specially the villages not touched by roads.
Hepatology as a sub speciality in Nepal dates back to 1982 AD when Liver unit was started in Bir hospital by Dr. Santosh Man Shrestha. With limited resources and first ultrasound in the country, the unit started giving services to Nepali patients. Although there have been flood of new institutes in past few years, no institute has started departments or unit dedicated to liver patient.
With increase in detection of liver diseases, now the time has come so that we monitor the same standard of care all over the Nepal. Local guidelines are still far away and the treatment is doctor and patient dependent. So, we the like minded doctors, working in the field of Hepatology and Gastroenterology felt the need of an association that will work in the field of Hepatology to increase the standard of care of the patient. Wit a general motto of "Save Liver - Save Lives", we have started Nepalese Association for the study of liver.
